Interview with Sutoyo

1st PART: History comprehension/understanding
·         Can you present yourself in a few words and explain us what is your job/responsibilities?
I’m the manager of this work site and so the manager of Nensi.
·         How many women do you have in your team?
There is only one women here: Nensi!

2nd PART:  General debate on woman engineer: differences and new things a woman can bring in a male team
·         Do you think men and women work differently? Could you give us concrete examples (personal works, project works)?
Sometimes to be on the site is not so good for women. In civil there is no problem but in roads profession it’s more complicated because the site is very big and you have to walk a lot. Women usualy work in clear area, in the office, they can be drafter or lab technician, but they don’t go on the site. Here in Jakarta you see really few woman on the site. You would find some in Bali but not here. At Bali there are even workers who are women! The workers are not always very intelligent and they are not sweet to women. Sometimes they whistle, or they talk. I have a friend, a girl, who is project manager, like me, but on buildings.
Women work with details that men sometimes forget. So drafter women are sometimes better. They are good for the calculations, they are patient with the data. Men are sometimes not so clear in their drawings.
Men and women communicate the same when there is something to say. Women manager are the same as men managers. If the workers are not good, we have to say it.
If the women is enough strong, she can go to the site. Nensi, she will maybe go to the site soon as a lab technician. Then she would have to go to the site to take asphalt to make tests.

           ·        Do you think that a mixed team is helpful for working atmosphere and is linked to the team performance?
Yes. Sometimes women makes the situation at work smoother, more familiar. Sometimes it’s like a flower! I’ve been here for 13 years, working sometimes with women. Wasco already had a task manager who was a woman, but she resigned.
